Today marks the anniversary of Shelby vs. Holder -- the 2013 Supreme Court decision that gutted the heart of the Voting Rights Act.
Because of this decision, states with a history of voter discrimination no longer need to seek approval from the Justice Department before changing their voting laws. Now, we’ve seen new efforts to limit voters’ -- primarily voters of color -- access to the polls. And we can only expect this trend to get worse.
Watch what Joe Biden has to say about the Voting Rights Act -- and then add your name to call on Congress to restore it.
Last year, 24 states introduced or enacted at least 70 bills to curtail the right to vote. It’s just as un-American now as it was during Jim Crow.
In her dissenting opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said that throwing out this provision of the Voting Rights Act when it was working was like "throwing away an umbrella in a rainstorm because you're not getting wet."
As Joe Biden said: now, we're in a hailstorm.
With so much at stake in 2020, it's never been more important to stand up for every American's fundamental right to have a say in the direction of this country.
Add your name to call on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act and make every American's voice equal, once and for all.
Thank you --
The Biden Team
